What is the IELTS test?
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is designed to help you work, study or migrate to a country where English is the native language. This includes countries such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and USA.
Your ability to listen, read, write and speak in English will be assessed during the test. IELTS is graded on a scale of 1-9.
IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English.

How the IELTS test works
The IELTS test assesses the English language ability of a candidate by evaluating all four skills i.e. Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The band provides an insight into the language level of the candidate, to succeed in their career or academics in an English-speaking country.
How to select the right IELTS test
There are two IELTS tests – IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. You need to choose the test based on your requirement.
IELTS Academic – Assesses whether your degree of English language proficiency is appropriate for an academic environment. The test reflects aspects of educational language and measures whether you have the required English language ability to study successfully in an English-speaking environment.
IELTS General Training – Assesses the candidate’s English language level to function effectively in everyday situations. The questions in the test relate to both the working environment and social circumstances.
If you are taking the IELTS test to apply for the UK visa for study, work or live there, then you may need to take the IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) Academic or General Training or the IELTS for Life Skills test.
Please ensure you know which test you need to take when you register. Once your registration has been confirmed, changes in module may require the payment of an administrative fee.
